Magix is an internationally renowned provider of video and music editing software, committed to innovating across their tech stack to help customers improve time to value, increase agility, and reduce costs. One of their flagship professional video editing products, VEGAS Pro, boasts over 1 million paying customers and acquires 200,000 new users every year.  Magix also offers a suite of video editing tools designed to serve users across all skill sets.

Magix came to Storyblocks because they were looking for “something to add significant value” to their subscription offering. Now, Storyblocks is their exclusive third-party stock media provider and a “key component” of their plans.

How the Storyblocks API integration works

The Magix product team integrated the Storyblocks API into both their cloud-based offerings and local client video editing software with a very streamlined user experience. They developed an interface inside their desktop software that notifies their cloud server once a user is logged in, which then directly communicates to Storyblocks via the API.

With this API integration, when a user is looking for stock content to use in their project, they can find it in a window in the application. From there they can search, filter, and preview Storyblocks assets right inside of the software before downloading directly into their project or cloud storage space. This seamless experience helps users get back to editing again in their timeline immediately. As Gary Rebholz, Chief Product Officer of Pro Video at VEGAS Software puts it: “All it costs the user is the time to find and download the file they want.”

Storyblocks as a differentiator and driver of paid subscriptions

“Having instant access to a comprehensive stock library at no extra cost and without leaving their project is great for customers. When the experience is as tightly integrated as we’ve done inside VEGAS Pro, it’s an even bigger benefit.”

– Gary Rebholz

Initially, Storyblocks content was only made available to paid subscribers of VEGAS Pro, but according to Rebholz, their teams “kept getting lots of requests from perpetual users to be able to access those tools – so we finally made that happen.”

This expanded access has increased in-app downloads significantly, showing the immediate value of this content to their users.

We definitely consider Storyblocks a key component of our offering. It would leave a sizable hole if we stopped offering it – people really seem to appreciate the library.

Proving value to the business and scaling access across products

VEGAS Pro was the first Magix product to leverage Storyblocks content via the API, and since then, they have expanded access across plans and products.

Rebholz explains: “We’ve really been using VEGAS Pro as a proving ground for new technology and that’s where we put our initial development efforts. Once we feel that
we have something that’s really working, we consider how we might roll it out to our
consumer products.”

The success that they have seen from growth in subscriptions and increased demand for Storyblocks content from users “has led to more saleable products,” according to Rebholz.

Derek H. Blume, who leads the software team for the award-winning VEGAS Pro video editor, acknowledges that the capabilities of Storyblocks API integration made extending the application to their other products “very easy and very quick.”

“Recently, we started including access to Storyblocks content into one of our professional-level audio tools, Sound Forge Pro, too. Typically these users would be after audio content, of course, but we recognized they might also be looking for video as well.”

– Derek H. Blume

Conclusion

Integrating Storyblocks’ API into their product offering has not only helped their customers work faster and more efficiently, but has exponentially increased the value of the subscriptions that Magix offers. The Storyblocks API has become a vital part of helping drive growth and demand while being simple to integrate into their other products, giving Magix the best of both worlds for seamlessly scaling their customer base.
